The shop was founded in 1962 by Mrs Barbara Cattle.
Mrs Cattle's late husband, Robert Cattle, was a former Lord Mayor of York and an ancestor of the famous York Silversmith of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, also called Robert Cattle.
Mrs Cattle's father, William Lee, was an avid collector of York silver and his personal collection of silver forms part of the collection of silver that can be viewed in the Treasury at York Minster.
Although the shop is no longer connected with the Cattle family, and has not been for some forty years, it is still owned by a family concern that has an unrivalled reputation for fine jewellery, watches and silver.
Barbara Cattle specialises in period jewellery and silver and is York's only member of the prestigious British Antique Dealers Association.
The first floor Georgian room is a genuine mid-18th century period room that has been extensively restored to as near the original condition as possible. Furnished with antique furniture, the room has become the ideal showcase for fine antique silver.
